With anything that we want to accomplish there has to be an exchange, something must be given up so we can get to something else. Sounds pretty simple, but yet it is harder to complete than you would think. We all want instant gratification, but in order to win at something you have be patient and persistent.
My husband and I’s new year resolution is to save a 20 percent down payment for a house. We live in the D.C. area (which is extremely expensive). How could we ever afford a $300k+ house? We never could unless we sacrifice now. So we are renting a basement apartment to cut down our costs. We don’t eat out, we only buy clothes unless they are absolutely necessary, and we never go on vacations. We have three kids in car seats and drive a 2006 P.T. Cruiser so we don’t have a car payment. Our life sounds pretty boring, however, once we have the money for the down payment all that sacrificing will have been worth it. We will live in one of the most expensive places in the United States and won’t be drowning in a mortgage payment.
If you have goals make a list of your top ones. Be specific with your goals and make sure you can measure your progress. As an example, we have to save $____ much money each month for the next 12 months. If we don’t our goal gets further away.
Also, it helps to have fun with it so you don’t get discouraged. Make signs with your goals throughout your home. Make a countdown sheet until you reach your goal. Whatever your goal just remember to be patient. Take one day at a time and before you known it you will have persevered all the way to the finish line!
